Bigotry, and other things you don’t want your kid picking up at WalMart

April 29th, 2007 by Summer

After tilling and turning all morning I finally had a spot ready for my pepper plants. I merrily skipped into the house, flug open the utility closet doors, pulled out my bucket of garden goodness, and found no pepper seeds. The packet of assorted seeds that I special ordered months ago was gone. I spent a frantic half hour tearing the entire closet apart before accepting that they were probably mistaken for trash and tossed. Damn you seed companty and your plain white seed packets!

Since A was napping I cleaned E and I up and we headed to Wal-Mart. Sure I couldn’t get the same kind of seeds, but I could get a packet of banana pepper and maybe some mixed red and green peppers. Everything seemed fine as we stood in line and paid. There was no reason to assume that anything horrible would happen in our quick shopping trip on a beautiful Sunday morning.

I was wrong.

Not even 5 feet from the doors a loud, gravelly voice began booming right behind me. “bleep bleep bleep Mexicans and their bleep bleep bleep Spanish! I can’t bleep buy a bleep thing without them bleep everywhere! bleep bleep bleep” The verbal assault went on the entire time it took to cross the parking lot and get into the car. I didn’t dare stop and turn to see who was shouting these things at the top of his lungs, half afriad that he might be carrying a weapon. I rushed E along and quickly buckled him into the car, then ran around and got inside myself without looking back. Luckily E was too concerned with rattling the seed packet in his hands and didn’t pay attention ot the angry man shouting in the parking lot.

What on earth drives a man to shout like a lunatic like that I will never know. And to direct his vile at someone based on nothing more than their ethnicity is even more disturbing.

Sadly, it happens often enough in small towns like this one.

Sometimes you feel like a nut…

April 29th, 2007 by Summer

I’ve decided that E is insane.

Well, yes, look at his parents. But that’s beside the point here.

No, what has drawn me to the current conclusion is his newfound loud of sounds. Not just any sounds either. We must have random, meaningless, made-up sounds eching off my head at all times. “Splick” and “Bloooooop” and “Squickwooplot” have replaced previous spoken language. Followed then by fits of giggles, dancing that slightly resembles a seizure, and growls if I do not immediately roll in laughter.

Most of the sounds remind me far too much of that fateful day when, as a young girl, I watched my beloved dog get ran over. Imagine the sound that body parts being squished out would make. Yes, now imagine those sounds being repeated a few thousand times each day. I admit, I get a bit nauseated at “splurt” being announced in my ear every time I try to take a bit of dinner.

Now that I think about it, I take it back that he is insane. Quite the contrary, I think he is trying to make mommy insane.

Books books books!

April 28th, 2007 by Summer

So, remember my hub Frugal Living Tips? The one with the great ideas on how to be frugal? I think it is time to come up with a part 2, for myself! Except this one will deal with how to be frugal when there are so many awesome things out there you want to get your kids. LOL

Seriously, why do there have to be 20 billion books out there that I would love the boys to have? And why does the local library seem to have none of them? In my mind I have dreams of the boys having massive book collections full of cherished favorites that will be praised for decades. Or at least have a good sized collection of books that they’ll love to pass on to their own kids.

I’ve begun planning out what books I want to add this fall to the lineup. E is such a book worm, like his mother. We could spend the day reading, if it weren’t for that pesky sunshine begging us to come out and play. I think everytime we are in the house I am being begged for a story, then just one more, just one more, just one more. I really should make more time to read to him, especially sicne he loves it so much and on average boys are less likely to be book worms when they are older.

Now, if I can work past the books then maybe I can focus on not gettign so excited over every cool toy I find. I tell myself that at least i’m going ga-ga over wooden, all natural toys. Pieces of plastic withlights and noises makes my head hurt too much. But a hand carved wooden doll house with handmade dolls! Can I buy 2? Looks like I need to learn how to resist advertising pressure to buy more toys for my child.

How does this work?

April 27th, 2007 by Summer

Has anyone heard of bid4prizes? Its a weird auction site where the lowest uniquebid wins. Lowest? I don’t get it either. Right now you can bid on an Apple iPhone , Samsung 50″ Plasma TV , or a Scion XB. I know Dearest would want the TV. Yeah, like he needs to watch baseball on that. I would never get him off the couch! The car is pretty cool.

A 1.5 Liter 16 valve in-line 4-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-I) technology.

Not that I have any clue what that means, but it sounds cool. I’d probably take the car, but then I’d sell it and buy myself a Saturn hybrid. Unless, they decide to auction a hybrid off next, then that would be pretty cool.
