Is There Life Without Kids?

What would you be doing right now if you had no kids?

Sheesh, hit me with a hard question why don’t ya. Is it sad that I can barely recall a life pre-kids? I vaguely remember sleeping past 7 AM and not having to hide behind large appliances to eat food that I didn’t want to share. But beyond that I’m not sure.

When I was 16 I had this life plan all worked out. I would go to college, get a teaching job just long enough to write my first novel, then quit and become a full time writer. I would become world famous, spend my days in my mansion or flying from coast to coast to do interviews and book signings. My books would all be best sellers, turned into movies, and I would be so brilliant that I would manage to turn my wealth into mega-wealth through investments here and there. I would date only the most beautiful men, but toss them aside as soon as I was bored with them. I would rent penthouse suites in the best hotels in las vegas and host week long parties that only the top names would attend. And I would look fabulous while doing it.

Yes, laugh it up. I was 16 for pete’s sake, what did I know about reality. All I knew was that we were poor and it sucked, so I wanted the complete opposite end of that.  Though, even in my most vividly planned out dreams of self indulgence  there was always this back up plan at the end. I would hit 40, find some young stud, and *ahem* make a baby. Of course the guy was never anywhere to be seen afterwards and I never let a kid get in the way of my lifestyle. But I always planned for a little person to pass over the keys to my riches to. Though, I always expected a girl. Huh.

Tales From The Grocery Isles

shopping cartI hate grocery shopping with Dearest, unfortunately the same reason that I hate it is why he refuses to let me go shopping without him. He’s just too damn picky!

The man acts as if food that actually comes form the dirt is going to kill him, or at least cripple him for life. When I send him to the store without me he typically returns with $50 worth of meat and a ton of boxed foods. Sure a few things are OK now and then, but he buys nothing but boxes and can of stuff. Our diet is almost all preservatives and artificial flavors. I’m not cool with that.

So Tuesday night when his sister offered to watch the boys for his birthday we went grocery shopping. Yes, we know we’re getting old when going to the store without the kids is a big event. Yet, even without the kids I was still ready to scream. Every time I touched an actual raw fruit or vegetable he sighed, rolled his eyes, and acted like I was one of the kids trying to sneak toys into the cart.

When I say “Get some veggies” he put three cans of corn in the cart and declared that was enough veggies for everyone for the next two weeks. What would we be eating? Think college kid on a budget cuisine. Sadly, that’s typical of his grocery shopping. So this week I put my foot down. Seriously down all the way. I would not be swayed by the sighing and rolling eyes, I would ignore the annoyed looks as I reached for real food, and I would not debate the merits of “but I ate that as a kid and I’m just fine”. I made a list and we were sticking to it, end of story.

No, he’s not happy. Tough. He should be grateful I’m not blowing his Pepsi money on Winter Park real estate and escaping for a while.

Sara Don’t Read This!

My wonderful friend Sara and her husband Pete are moving soon and I know things have been stressful. Trying to pack their stuff, figure out what to do with their pets, say goodbye to friends, and brace themselves for the long drive from Arizona to Washington.

I adore Sara. She’s training to be a doula, a graduate from a massage therapy schools, works with kids, and makes and sells some of the best soaps and lotions over. And she’s just too cool. With the big move she’s a bit sad and wanted some mail to be waiting for her at the new house to cheer her up.

I ordered a bunch of great beads and a beautiful silver pendant to make her a special necklace that I hope will meet her there.  I’m putting together jasper, jade, aventurine and some small pearls with a silver Goddess pendant. Once I have it finished I’ll share a picture of it.

I’m just so excited for her and I hope this big move will be exactly what she needs.
