A Special Kind Of Person

Back in January I read a post over at Miss Britt’s about girlfriends. The kind of friend that shows up unannounced, tosses her kids in your backyard, and then gets down to the important business of creating new cocktail recipes. That post has stuck in my head since I first read it, mainly because that’s not something I’ve ever really known. I spent my teen years and early twenties head deep in drugs and negative experiences which made making those kinds of friends impossible. And now my natural shyness plus fear of putting myself in a place I don’t want to be keeps me more to myself.

But now, I’ve got my own definition of a “girlfriend”. It’s someone who will come over to your house the day after you give birth in your bathroom to clean the blood stain of your floor. And then the next day come over and clean your nasty kitchen that you haven’t really touched in weeks while her daughter keeps your older kids entertained. And then send her husband and kids over to clean and mow your yard.

I’m not Catholic, but if I could I’d have to nominate Christine for Sainthood. Because seriously, the woman brought me pain pills and cleaned my house and acted like it was a privilege just to cuddle with Saffron for a little bit. And no, I won’t share her. Go get your own.

Aww… that’s the kind of friend you need to keep, for sure!

Oh, yes … it was soooo difficult to hang out in your very quiet house (where my five children WEREN’T), scrub some dishes and listen to your friggin gorgeous newborn coo!

We’re just having our own community. The men are out hunting for our food (going to work and toiling over the earth) while we chit-chat and emotionally support the chic that just birthed a baby (on the Berber carpet).

When we’re old and gray, I’ll be older and grayer, and you can change my diapers when the incontinence kicks in. Your day is coming …
