Are You Ready For Buy Nothing Day?

It’s been years since I joined the mass frenzy of shoppers that happens the day after Thanksgiving. Not because I’ve always been conscious of my shopping, at first it was mainly because large crowds in small places makes me feel claustrophobic. I avoided the shopping rush to keep myself from a yearly nervous breakdown.

Buy Nothing DayBut the last couple of years I’ve had a better reason to abstain, Buy Nothing Day. One day where a few people decide to screw the mass consumerism and enjoy life without racking up credit card debt. No, it probably doesn’t mean much. What’s a few people in the grand scale of the American shopping experience? What’s one day when there are still 364 other days to spend beyond your means? But it makes me happy to think there are a few people at least trying.

A couple years ago I read and loved A Reasonable Life and it made me feel like there was this whole life out there I was missing. Earlier this year I was sucked into Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping and felt like there really was a better way to do it. Then last week I was a lucky winner of a free copy of Radical Simplicity and I spent the weekend pouring over the ebook and making notes in my head. With our little mini economic crisis going on in our house ideas like simplicity and shunning consumerism are more than beautiful ideas, they’re a necessity.

We’ll be buying nothing all day, and other than food probably nothing all week. Or the week after. And in my head I’ll be making plans, thinking up ways to cut back even more, and looking for an online job that will let me save money without spending it on daycare and gas. Bring on the Buy Nothing Day, I’m ready for it.

Sara, you should join in. Instead of mass shopping just a day of calm and peace.

VDog, I know exactly what you mean! LOL

Oh man, I wish I could do that.

I’m actually about to venture out at 4am on Friday for pretty much the first time.

    Good excuse though …

My son’s birthday is on Monday, and I want to get him a laptop (he’s 16).

Maybe next year I’ll do the buy nothing thing … really do like the idea.
