I was asked about this in an email and thought I’d explain here also. From the birth story earlier I mentioned a party next door.
When we first moved here there was a woman living alone across the street from us. One day she just upped and moved, and left behind several of her cats that we ended up taking in. Immediately moved in a young guy with a notorious reputation here in town. Rich parents, connected grandparents, major drug habit. Being a recovering addict myself, yeah I knew the guy. And I stayed the hell away.
So the night that I’m in labor he’s throwing a party. Tons of people coming and going, loud music, obvious notorious dealings. The place could have been a commercial for drug rehabs. The image always hit me as a real moment. Here I was, just a few feet from the stuff I once could never turn down, and yet I was going through labor and birth without even touching the legal drugs.
The memory of Evan’s birth is mixed with memories of drugs and parties, though there were none for me in his birth. Which still makes it better than Trey’s birth, but that’s a different story.
