Lady’s Big SurpriseA while back I was sent copies of books 1,2 and 3 of The Lucky Foot Stable series by JoAnn Dawson. This is a cute series of books for young girls (ages 9-12) that parents will actually want their kids to read. No adult topics, no hours at the mall shopping, and no mean girls are present in each of these stories. Something that is pretty darn amazing considering how prevalent these are in today’s society. Instead they are just simple stories about girls, their horses, and their adventures.

Jody and Mary, the two heroines of the books, are fun and lively full of adventure. They are real and fresh and without the ugly trappings female characters are usually written into. Both are intelligent and athletic, their connections with the horses is written much deeper than the typical “little girls and ponies” imagery we see. When adventure calls they jump in and use their own spunk to get themselves through it.

I’m not a horse person myself, I think they’re beautiful animals but I’m a bit too timid for them. So I was thrilled that the back of each book contains a glossary of horse terms. Whenever I had no clue what they were talking about I could just flip to the back of the book and find out. Even if your daughter isn’t a horse girl (like me) she can still learn something about the, and maybe even start to want one.

Right now I have a copy of Lady’s Big Surprise, Star of Wonder and A Star Discovered (was Willie To the Rescue) brand new to give away to one lucky person. All you have to do is leave a comment here telling me what was your favorite book as a child. What story drew you in and never let go?

This giveaway will run until Friday the 21st. A random comment will be choosen as the winner and announced Saturday morning.

oh I have two girls that LOVE horses. What is the age range for it? I have a 7 year old girl that is in a high second grade. But sounds like something she’d love so count me in. My favorite story was always the Freshmen Dorm series, before that it was Little House on the Prarie. I just loved stories about other little girls doing adventures.

I loved so many books as a child. If I wasn’t outdoors you’d find me with my nose in a book. I’d often finish one in a day or two.

My favorite was Diary of Anne Frank. I know that’s a deep one but it got me interested in social issues. As a young adult and even now I still read about the Holocaust, especially stories of people who are survivors describing that tragedy.

When I was a kid I was really into biographies. My school library had a section of biographies - it was some sort of set, because they were all physically similar. There were three or four of the big library shelves full of them.

      I read them all. ;-)

When I was this age I was really into the Baby Sitters Club books. But I sure like the idea of no “mean” girls or trips to the mall, which I seem to remember slightly from those books!

One of my favorites was “Eight Cousins” by Louisa May Alcott. I loved reading about another time in America –about someone who was well-off and lived in a huge house–orphaned, but with lots of family around to take care of her and love her.

I loved Where the Red Fern Grows. My 4th grade teacher read this aloud to us, and I absolutely loved it. I got a copy for myself and then my mom read it to me at night before bed. Can’t wait until my daughter is old enough to read this wonderful story.
