Breastfeeding: The Eyes Have it

1 month

Mama milk made me fat!

Ree at Pioneer Woman is torturing me by posting page. after. page. of newborn pictures. TORTURE I TELL YOU, TORTURE!

I swear, I can feel my ovaries quivering with each photo. There’s on in particular that kills me. It’s the eye roll. Oh gods I miss the eye roll. It’s one of the things I deeply, desperately hoped Trey would do like his brother. And of course, he never did. Looking back I should have seen that as a sign of his personality to come, but I was just too love drunk on the newborn goodness.

For you mamas that didn’t nurse or didn’t get the joy of the eye roll let me tell you it’s amazing. One second your baby is fussing and rooting and waiting for that milk to come, and them BAM, the eyes roll back in the head and his breathing slows down. That’s when he’s hit the good stuff, when the thick milk hits his belly and he’s like like his father watching football after Thanksgiving. Gone, baby, gone!

I used to joke and tell Dearest that Evan had the addict face. I know, it’s not nice to call your newborn an addict. But that’s how it looked to me, like a junkie getting his fix. From fidgety and anxious to sudden pure bliss. His eyes roll back, his body goes limp, and you start to worry that he might become one of those kids nursing till he’s eight. I can’t help it, I loved that face.

nursing newborn treySadly Trey never gave me the pleasure of the eye roll, junkie face. He preferred to close his eyes tight and keep them that way. Clearly my milk wasn’t like heroin to him. And yet, he’s the one still nursing at 2 while Evan was done by 15 months. Go figure.

And by the way Ree, I’m so totally with you. There’s something about a sweet smelling newborn that makes me want to wrap them up and nurse them. Not that I would ever do that. At least, not without permission that it. Heh.

Oh geez. I’m a Baby Boomer Flower Child product of the late ’60s & early ’70s. What happened to me? My kids were born in the ’80s. Never got a taste. Anyone who walked in the door got a kid and a bottle. Your post makes me feel guilty. :(

Cindi, I’m sorry that my post made you feel guilty. I was simply sharing my experiences, not damning any one else’s.
