Can You RESIST?
I know that I already did 2 group writing things this month, but this one was just too good to pass up. Kate of Babylune wants people to write a post about your favorite charity, social cause or helpful organization. Trying to choose a favorite is almost too hard to do! I hope that if you have one of your own that you will choose to write a post as well and help spread the word on what matters most to you.
So let me tell you about RESIST. They began in 1967 as a resistance group against the draft. Since then they have grown and become a much needed support foundation for social change. They move activists and research causes that need to be tackled. They also work to provide funds and equipment needed by other groups striving for social change.
Their original Call To Resist Illegitimate Authority is important still today. Since then RESIST has gone on to help provide funding all over the world for groups working towards environmental solutions, racism, economic justice and quality education for everyone. You can see here the many varied groups that received funding in 2006. It is because of donations that RESIST can continue to help groups striving for great social change.
They also publish newsletters that continue the call for action. Some of my favorites include their case against one-size-fits-all standards in public education (written by the great Alfie Kohn) and their thoughts on big companies selling bottled water.
There are so many great reasons that I support RESIST, almost too many to share in a single blog post. You have to go to their site, spend some time reading, and get a feel for them yourself to really appreciate what a powerful foundation they can be.
