I Made Butter

I did, I made butter.

I’m like a modern pioneer, making butter without giving up the conveniences of electricity and running water. Check this stuff out.

It was freakishly simple too. Pour heavy cream into a mason jar, screw on lid, set on counter. Leave it there over night. The next morning pick it up, slowly shake it while making breakfast and getting the kids up. Or about 20 minutes. Check, there will be a big ball of butter in the center.

Then I just had to pull the ball out, knead it a little in my hands to work out any extra buttermilk (save that stuff too, great for pancakes), and stir in some salt. Presto, I made butter.

I got the recipe for it from the book Made From Scratch, one of my holiday gifts this year. I also made a loaf of bread from the book. You know, to go with the butter. And no, there is none left.

When winter hits some people dream of orlando vacations, but I dream of warm bread and butter.

I’ve been meaning to ask you if you and the boys had shaken yourselves up some buttery goodness, yet. We love skimming the cream off the top of the raw milk right after we bring it home, and set it aside for butter. Mmmmmmm

When I was in college, I had a children’s lit professor who was a 3rd grade teacher. As part of her lesson on Little House in the Big Woods, she would pass around a baby food jar with heavy cream and each child would get to shake it. By the end of class, they had butter. She did it with us and even 20-year-olds thought it was pretty cool. My daughters were going to do the same thing for a homeschool history fest we were a part of, but we just didn’t have time.

I have a friend who made butter out of breastmilk with her firstborn. When he started solids, she wanted him to have toast and butter too just like she was having, so she made breastmilk butter and she damn near cried when her son then threw the toast with that precious butter and fed it to the dog. :-)

First of all, nice snow! Love it.

Second, isn’t it cool to realize how simple it is, and totally satisfying? I had access to raw milk (I’m assuming yours is raw, too, as you left it on the counter overnight) for a month during the summer, and LOVED it. I made butter, yogurt, and labneh. Totally cool.

    Happy Solstice.
