I tried to make soap.

I’ve had a recipe to make soap sitting around since December, and I kept saying I was going to to do it someday. Well today’s rain storm made today that perfect someday. The recipe is as follows:

Honey Vanilla Soap

1 bar Ivory soap, grated
1 teaspoon honey
5-6 drops vanilla
1/4 cup boiling water

Mix boiling water with honey and vanilla. Step for 15 minutes. Bring to a second boil and pour over 2 cups shredded ivory soap. Mix well and let stand 20 minutes. Divide into 3 equal parts, rolling each into a ball. Place on a glass plate and let dry 3-4 days.

The first problem came when dearest came home with a bar of Irish Spring soap instead of Ivory. Ivory is plain white, no dyes or scents so you are starting with a clean slate. Irish Sping on the other hand is green and scented. I almost decided to just wait until another time, but I really really really wanted to try my hand at this so i decided not to let this one little set back stop me.

Since the recipe was already off I took off on my own plan. Instead of honey I used some ultra silky oatmeal bath wash that I adore. Mixed with the vanilla is smelled divine in the pot, and I could only hope that it would mask the strong smell of the green flakes in the bowl and hopefully still turn out descent.

Mix together, let set, then shape into balls. I don’t have a glass plate to set the balls on so I used a shallow glass baking dish that I rarely use. I stuck them up in the cabinets above the washer and dryer so they can dry undisturbed by cats or kids. LOL Hopefully in a few days I’ll have yummy soap. Not that anything I make could compare to the yummy lilac soap I bought from Flutterby Gifts, but I can try.
