Kick The Sposies To The Curb
Amy, the Crunchy Doestic Goddess, is always having little challenges on her blog to encourage people to be ore green and eco-friendly. Her latest one, that you should all join, is to kick the disposable stuff habbit. Paper towels, paper plates, disposable diapers, or what ever use it and trash it thing you’ve got laying around. Stick it in a drawer somewhere and see how well you can manage without it.
I’m being an honorary cheerleader for this one and rah-rahing you all on to trashless victory. Cloth diapers? Love them! Reusable feminine products? Brilliant! Cloth napkins? Get all fancy and pretend you’re having dinner somewhere you couldn’t afford. And yes, life without toilet paper will be a mind blowing experience. Ask Christine, thin paper holds no candle to soft flannel on your sensitive parts.
Oh don’t give me that look. At least I’m not suggesting seashells here.
OK, so what disposable product are you going to try to give up? Amy has a list of ideas that you could browse through, or try to come up with your own. Then stick with it. Seriously, you can do it. No really, you are more than capable of a little change. I know you can do it. *insert cheer here*

The only thing disposable we use is toilet paper. Please don’t make me part w/ my TP. Please? I mean, someday…when I have less people in our house (meaning, less butts and wahoos), THEN I’ll use cloth TP. I swear it!

hmmm I’m gonna have to just cheer on this one too! Cloth wipes, got it. Cloth towels for spills and whatnot..got it! We really don’t use paper…I even recycle my morning wake up notes
(even though I didn’t stitch them, they are on paper…lmao)
I love cloth diapers, cloth wipes (for the todder, we use TP), and cloth pads. I’ve been trying forever to get away from paper towels. I keep a roll on hand for major nasty disasters, like cat poop out of the box or something, but my husband keeps getting them out and using them for everything! If I hide the paper towels, then he has an excuse to not clean up any pet messes he happens to come across, but if I keep them out he uses them for wiping up every tiny spill…

I could not give up toilet paper . . . . that’s a deal-breaker for me, for sure.
We could give up paper towels, but I do like having them around for the rare occasions when I cook with meat. I just don’t like using my reusables to clean up an area where raw meat has touched. Fortunately, I make meat dishes maybe twice a month. (Plus, my pets love to play with the empty rolls!)
My husband and I are making a concerted effort to only use reusable canvas shopping bags. Of course, we’re still getting into the habit, and forgetabout 1/3 of the time. But we do reuse the disposable bags until they can’t be reused anymore. We also reuse containers that we get from buying potoato salad at the deli. We have yet to pay for a food storage container!

Wait, you’ve gone and gotten pregnant while I’ve been slacking? congrats. Can’t wait to follow along.
I’ve not made this leap yet to doing w/o paper stuff, especially TP. Especially. Did I say especially?

Keep it up, refill those plastic water bottles. They are the largest dump filler ever. How about Bamboo Baby clothes, they are even better than organic cotton.
I am thinking about starting to use cloth pads. We already use cloth diapers, cloth wipes and cloth nose wipes.

Well I am slow coming to the green scene but I will start by getting rid of disposable napkins and paper towels. Frankly, my kids are irritating me into switching to cloth, because the drop the paper ones on the floor and then the dogs shred them and then I am cleaning shredded napkins up all over the place!

i must say.. this is really silly. consider the energy and water you (and how many thousands upon thousands) use to maintain a supply of cloth wipes.
TP, tissues, paper towels AND flush toilets were invented for very good reasons – hygiene being paramount. even cars were invented because humans had been knee deep in horse sh!t! sewage gets treated one way and gray water another. you’re putting sewage in gray water.
trash wood pulp and recycled paper products are used to make TP and other disposable household paper goods – at overall MUCH lesser energy cost than maintaining non-disposable goods of these kind on a wide scale. (& yes, that includes the myth of cutting down trees to provide supplies to make these particular items).
sorry, gotta roll my eyes at this one (while applauding your efforts to curb environmental destruction).
Sheesh, it is something I have considered. Have you though about the energy and water used to make disposable paper products? It is actually more than the little used to wash reusable products. Not to mention that the water used to manufactur the products is filled with chemicals that gets seeped into the ground. Then you have to add that to the landfill waste, something that my reusable products is not adding to.
As for myth, where exactly does paper come from on your planet?
Sorry sheesh, but you’re the one who comes out silly here. I’ll continue to use a small amount of water and energy and stay perfectly sanitary, you go on wasting huge amounts of waste and energy to add to the overflowing landfills and the underground water pollution. Thanks.
