Kill The Car – No Impact Week Day 3
Day 3 of No Impact Week, and today’s challenge is to change your transportation habits.
Here’s where I can excel. Since we’re a one car family I’ve got to use my feet anywhere I want to go during the day. I’d like to get a bike someday to ride with the kids, but for now we walk most places (or I walk and the boys ride their bikes).
Think fewer emissions and more fun, free time, and money. Let’s hop to it and start brainstorming how you can change your mode of transportation to have the least impact possible. And remember — you’re still attempting to buy nothing new and make no trash.
Two months into his No Impact year, Colin and his family began phasing out all forms of mechanized travel — no planes, subways, taxis, cars, not even elevators. They biked, walked, and scooted, and not only did better by the Earth, but discovered that “active transportation” is less stressful (no traffic jams!), cheaper, burns tons of calories, and is plain old FUN. Using active transportation lowers your stress — plus, you get to spend more time with your family. Now, who wants to honk at that?
Of course we don’t all live where you can walk or bike everywhere. That’s why using mass transport, or just sharing a ride with a friend, helps. You can also plan out your trips to get the most done in the most effective way. Instead of making several trips or driving all over town and back, plan one trip. Avoid places where you’ll be sitting for a long time waiting (like the drive through!), and try to get it all done at once.
