Love Struck

February 14th, 2008 by Summer

usDid I ever tell the story of how Dearest and I came to be together? No? Well then you’re in luck! Since there are two writing contests this month on topics of love, Love Struck at Touched By An Angel and the Write Away contest at Scribbit, I thought I would share the weird and wonderful way we met.

First, you have to know the pre-story. Before I met Dearest I was actually about to be married to someone else. The dress was bought, the place was ready, and I had a sparkling ring on my finger. We had been having a few little fights, nothing serious (to me) and I assumed they were mostly nerves. Silly things like whether or not to take my burger back to the fast food place when they made it wrong. While they seemed like normal silly couple fights to me, to him they were huge and meant that we weren’t meant to be together. One day he came home from work, nervous and pacing the house, before finally telling me that he had fallen for another woman at his work and wanted me to move out immediately.

I spent about 2 months crying on my mother’s couch, going up and down as he would suddenly call and cry over the phone at how he made a mistake and then be back with her and ignoring me for days. Finally my mother told me to get my butt up and do something or else. A travel plaze along the highway that she drove to gt to work each night was hiring a nigh cashier. It would be perfect as we could car pool and keep each other awake after long nights. So the next day she drove me there to apply.

The guy behind the counter was dreamy. Oddly he was the complete opposite in looks and style of every other guy I had ever dated, but I fell for him anyway. When he smiled and told me that the manager was on vacation I melted. As soon as I got into the car I turned to my mother and said “I just met the man I’m going to marry.” He must have felt something similar because when I went back in nearly a full 2 weeks later to talk to the manager the same gorgious guy was there and remembered the exact day when I had came in to apply. *sigh*

It turned out that the hot guy had also just been dumped right before what was going to be his wedding. So we had that collective self-pity thing that drew us together. After several months working together I got up the guts to call him and ask if he would like to hang out after work. I actually did a little dance when he said yes. We spent nearly every single day together after that. First as just friends, then as something more. And now as partners.

And when he walks into the room I still giggle and blush a little. Especially when he smiles.

Ahhh, how sweet. And definitely meant to be–afterall you both broke off engagements right before meeting. It doesn’t get much more meant to be than that.
