Missouri Sees The Light
I’ve been questioning whether or not I’ve needed glasses for some time now, so when I read the headline I almost thought my eyesight had finally given out and I would need some reading magnifiers. But as it turns out my eyes did not deceive.
Midwives Licensure Bill Passes Missouri Senate Committee
Finally Missouri is going to allow midwives to practice. Can I get a “hell yeah”? It’s very exciting for women in Missouri. Not only are midwives finally going to be allowed to do what they do best, women are finally being treated like adults capable of making their own decisions. No more patting them on the head with a “There, there. You don’t know what’s best for yourself, let me take of that and you just go back to baking muffins.” Do I feel a little jaded? Yeah, I do.
When I was pregnant with Trey I saw a midwife for the first half of the pregnancy, the same one who caught Evan when he was born. I remember a woman seeing her at the same time who drove 8 hours both ways from Missouri just to see my midwife. Imagine, your only choice is to drive for hours to receive the care you deserve or risk the law by finding one of the few underground midwives doing illegal services.
When women’s choices are safe and legal that is a huge step forward. Now if only the ACOG would get over themselves.

I am so ignorant of these types of laws–I had no idea there were such obstacles and am (naively) shocked. ugh.
