Mud Stompin’

The boys and I spent an hour at the park this morning digging around in the smelly, slimy creek that runs next to it. Oh it was gross. Green slime everywhere, bugs by the thousands, and an endless supply of mud oozing all around. They loved it!

We watched dragonflies zipping around us, tadpoles swimming around in the few clear areas, bees landed on the flowers a few inches from our faces, and moss covered sticks were swung through the air amid giggles and screams. And I swear, only a few of the screams were from me. There’s something like the threat of slimy moss being tossed at my hair that puts me out of my comfort zone.

Still it was a blast. The park equipment was forgotten, along with the kickballs we had brought with us. I only wish I had brought my camera. Evan found a dead Cicada floating in the water that he was pretty excited to inspect. Last week we got the book Bugs by Shane McEvey from the library so he was thrilled to put his new found knowledge to the test. He pointed out water striders, told me the difference between water and land bugs (land bugs have bigger antennae), and asked a thousand questions about what each bug we saw was and ate.

big bugWhen we finally made it home I was dive bombed in the yard by some kind of giant bug. At first I thought it was another Cicada and naively followed it into the tree. When I finally found the thing it was certainly not a harmless Cicada. This nasty guy was huge, and his antenna were practically as big as it’s whole body. It didn’t seem to notice me as I tried to get a decent photo of it, but I made sure to stay back in case it decided I was lunch. I only had my cellphone on me so the photos aren’t the greatest.

I guess the boys and I got our nature study in today. I think that entitles me to a little veg-out time now.

    Hello!

I’ll start off with saying I’m from the U.S.

I just want to say that I think this is a great contest. For some moms, breastfeeding turns out to be pretty easy, but for others, there are challenges left and right, and those moms need as much support as they can get. My breastfeeding experience recently ended (sadly) because my daughter weened herself. She just doesn’t want anything to do with boobs anymore. But without the support of others, I don’t think we would have made it as far as we did.

If I happen to win this prize, I will give it to my cousin, who just had her baby Trenton Alexander on July 20th, and is now breastfeeding her new baby boy. I wish for her to have the best breastfeeding experience possible.

    Thanks for doing this contest!

    Cheers,
    Teresa

Wow that was weird, I clicked to leave a comment for the breastfeeding contest, and I left a message on the bug post!

Since I’m already here, I’m curious to know what kind of bug that is? It looks like a beetle of some kind.

Okay, I did some googling and I think it’s a Cottonwood Borer: Here are some links
