My Big Belly

So far through this pregnancy I’ve only gained 4 pounds, and I’ve been pretty damn proud of that. It’s not that I’m worried about being fat or having a big baby, it’s that I started this pregnancy fairly overweight already.  My starting size is a reminder that I have to be careful, too big of a weight gain could easily slip me into the high-risk category of pregnancy with all kinds of issues that come with an over-weight pregnancy. With each pound I gain I increase my chances of high blood pressure, diabetes, and premature labor*.

So I’ve been proud of my 4 pounds. I look like I’ve swallowed a beach ball, and I can see a definite growth in my stomach. Which means that the weight I’m gaining from pregnancy is being counter balanced by the fat I’m losing in general. I’m healthy, the baby is healthy, and if I can keep weight gain low to moderate we’ll stay that way.

But all that changed this week. This week Christine showed up at my door carrying boxes stuffed with roasted turkey, extra buttery mashed potatoes, and a box full of cake, brownies, and cookies. In one week my 4 pound gain has turned into 10. That’s right, I packed on another 6 pounds in a single week shoveling all that yummy goodness down my throat. Ask me about the super rich and creamy turkey pot pie I made. Go on and ask me.

*Note – Whether or not being over-weight causes more risk with pregnancy is actually fairly controversial. Many doctors feel that it puts a mother in the high risk area while many midwives disagree. There is evidence on both sides so I’m taking a “better safe than sorry” approach. While I’m certainly not counting calories or worrying about appetite suppressants I am trying to be more aware of what I’m eating and making an effort to be as active as I can. While I don’t want to gain too much weight I also do not want to gain too little.

Sounds about right! I think as lond as you eat healthy, get your blood pressure checked you’ll be fine.

I gained 50 lbs with my first pregnancy, 70 lbs with my second. My doctor was not concerned because I wasn’t eating like I should have gained that much. I was eating right and exercising and I just seemed to be pre-disposed to it. I was healthy throughout and there were no problems.

I think you should be comfortable and eat what you want so long as you don’t overdo it and I really think your body is going to do what it is going to do.

I gained a lot with my first two also. LOL The big difference for me is that before both I was in a healthy weight range, so gaining a lot didn’t bug me. This time I’m starting out already over-weight so I don’t want to put on quite as much.
