November Is Family Literacy Month
I remember being little and having my own big book of children’s stories. It was a mixed lot stuff, from classic stories to newer ones. I fell in love with Richard Scarry in that book, everything he wrote seemed to be made of magic. I was lucky that I had family members that valued reading, encouraged it and pushed me to be a reader.
In case you didn’t know, November is Family Literacy Month. To celebrate this month Better World Books is hosting a special sale: buy any four used children’s books for only $10. The great thing about buying from Better World Books is that they use the money they get to actually try and make a better world. A portion of the cost goes towards several great charities they sponsor.
According to Better World Books “The world is currently facing a global illiteracy pandemic”
- Globally, an estimated 781 million adults are illiterate. Of that number, approximately 64 percent are women.
- UNESCO Institute for Statistics - In the United States, 30 million adults possess below-basic literacy skills. Eleven million are non-literate in English.
- National Assessment of Adult Literacy - In Sub-Saharan Africa, 42 million children are not enrolled in school.
- WhiteHouse.gov - Asia is home to 73 percent of the world’s illiterate population.
- UNESCO Institute for Statistics - In Latin America, most children attend school an average of 5.4 years.
- U.S. Agency for International Development
Your part is simple. Buy some great used books, get them cheap (free shipping), feel good because A) buying used helps the environment, and B) you’re helping to fund global literacy. Isn’t giving good?

Thank you for this! Reading is huge in our house. Since Shelby started reading, she hasn’t stopped and I love it!
I just ordered $20 worth of books from BetterWorldBooks. What an awesome site!
We love story time at our house, the best part of the day, for us and the kids. Thanks for the post!
