Parenting on Twitter - Top 25 Moms Who Tweet
Hello there! Like this post? Subscribe to the feed and get more giggles every day.
Hello, my name is Summer and I am a Twitter addict.
Thee was a time when being a stay at home mom meant hours and hours of loneliness. You spent the day stuck inside with your kids, little to no adult interaction, even less stimulation for your brain. If you did get out it was to go grocery shopping or run errands, and parents with little kids know that is more often a test in patience and maintaining sanity than a time for chatting with others. Of course there are the blessed play dates, but for many moms they come few and far between.
With the coming of the internet more and more moms were able to find a virtual fence to chat over. As it’s grown and grown we’ve been able to stick out necks out in places we once had to wait till the kids were nearly grown to see. And the anxiety got a little less, and we started feeling a little less lonely. Message boards and chat groups and instant messaging opened up all new windows. Add to the list Twitter, the social, streaming, growing chat that more and more moms are joining. Where you can be home changing a diaper while discussing politics with a reporter, adding your opinion on marketing tools, and asking thousands of people about a new recipe all at the same time. It’s like the backyard fence magnified to infinity.
There are new moms and experienced moms. Moms that work at home, moms that work in the office, and moms that work on the road. Environmental moms, soccer moms, moms with tattoos, moms that take photos, and moms raising kids with problems. And we are all joining together to chat about everything from parenting to politics, favorite books to favorite brands, and all the small details in between. It’s amazing, watching a dynamic conversation happening amongst women that didn’t even know each other existed before opening that little Twitter account.
Has it changed parenting? I think so. New ideas are spread, discussed, debated, and inspired. Moms asking about problems with their child’s school are getting information on homeschooling, charter schools, and virtual schools from other moms who are actually using these things. Caring for children with issues is open on the table as moms from all over share their own tips and ideas. Ideas that were once little known now have the potential to spread like wildfire just from short conversations between moms. New parenting styles and techniques are opening up to moms that were once out of the loop.
The downside, however, is that new moms just joining the Twitter conversation can be easily overwhelmed by the sheer number of people there are talking. So where can a new mom step in without feeling like you are drowning? First, start with the blogs you already read. Many bloggers use Twitter already and have a link on their blog to their Twitter profile so that readers can follow them, like me for instance. You can also use Twitter Search to see people talking about topics that you love. Just type in a word or two and watch as a real time list of conversations is pulled up before your eyes.
