Pecans

bucket of pecansNearly every house along our street has pecan trees growing in front of it. Walks are taken over pecan covered sidewalks and yards, the crunch of their shells under our feet. The boys alove it. Finding the ones with holes in them or the ones half eaten. Talking about the squirrels and birds andbugs who eat the nusts. We even cracked one open last night to find it was hollow except for a wiggling, white larvae of some kind.

But the best part, by far, is getting to eat the nuts. When the weather is nice Evan brings his bucket along and the boys gather handfuls of the precious treats. When the bucket gets full pockets are loaded down to make sure they get plenty to eat. Once we get home the boys crowd around me in awe as I crack open the shells one by one to reveal the meat inside.

It is almost like magic to them, this wonderfully sweet food found inside this hard, dark shell. And the *crack* of the shells breaking is music to their ears. In typical boy fashion anything that snaps, cracks, or pops is a thing to be loved.

And anything that occasionally makes mom scream and jump by having something white and wiggling inside is a treasure too.

That looks like a lot of fun! We don’t have any nut trees near us.
