Piggy Banks and Paying Bills

This morning on Twitter I was asking people if they knew of any of those special piggy banks separated into Save/Spend/Donate compartments. I was sent links on two different ones, a piggy shaped one and a Moon Jar, for me to choose between. But it isn’t the saving that is the story here, it’s the reason behind it.

Yesterday Evan tried to kill Trey. OK, so maybe that’s a little harsh. Yesterday Evan convinced Trey to stick a piece of metal in the outlet on the wall to see what would happen. Because he’s smart enough to know now to do it himself, but curious enough to let little brother be the Guinea pig. And Trey, well no matter how many times I tell him that something is dangerous it only takes big brother prompting him once to do it.

Luckily the only thing that was hurt was the electricity. Their bedroom and the hallway are now powerless, and because this house hasn’t been updated in decades the insanely old wiring will cost a fortune to fix. Cue the piggy bank.

Evan’s never really had an allowance before. I’ve been on the fence about it. For one I don’t want him to be motivated by money to do things he should already be doing around the house. It’s not an extra job to put away laundry, it’s just a part of life. We all have to pitch in to keep the house running smoothly. On the other hand I don’t want Evan thinking we are hoarding the money over him, that he has to beg for every little thing. That doesn’t mean I’m going to hand him twenty dollar bills, but having some change of his own to grab when the ice cream truck rolls by would be nice.

Then the electricity went out. And we turned all colors of mad. I won’t lie, there was yelling involved. I went and took a walk to stop myself from screaming until I was hoarse.

Now we’re getting Evan a piggy bank, and an allowance. And he has to start saving his money to help pay for the electrician. No, he won’t save enough money to even make a dent in the bill, but I think a few weeks without ice cream and new HotWheels and the such will help hit home the idea. If you mess up, you have to pay for it. Sometimes literally.
