Pregnancy Cravings
This cartoon is so absolutely appropriate for me right now. Especially the ice cream part. Curling up on the couch with a spoon and a pint of cookie dough is my favorite Me Time.
When I was pregnant with Evan all I wanted to eat was tuna fish sandwiches and glasses of pink milk. I managed to keep myself from consuming mass qualities of tuna fish and enduring mercury poisoning, but it was tough. Thank goodness that’s not my weakness this time around with the FDA wanting to increase the amount of fish suggested as “safe” to eat.
Then with Trey pizza was my desire. Specifically, pizza sauce. I could shove entire large pizzas down my throat in minutes just for the taste of that tempting red sauce. Oh the garlic, basil, and oregano goodness mixed with the tomato flavor was almost too much for me to ignore.
This time, however, ice cream is my craving. Which especially sucks since our freezer doesn’t stay cold enough to freeze bug jugs of ice cream. I’ve even tried the small pints of Ben and Jerry’s and they always melt before I can get to them. So instead I was making poor Dearest go out every night, once the kids were in bed, and bring me home the little $1 vanilla cones from Sonic. Usually he would walk in, hand me the cone, go put his coat up, and come back to find I had already eaten the entire thing and was wanting another. Just writing about it now is making me drool.
OK, now I need someone else to share their gorging stories. I know I’m not the only woman who tried to eat her body weight in food every day during pregnancy. Plates of pasta, bowls of berries, jars of jam. Come on, what did you fill up on when you were pregnant?

Oh gosh….with my first it was mashed potatoes and gravy. With my second it was spicy Mexican food and chocolate milk…and since I live in Georgia, that meant Taco Bell. I even made up a scrambled egg tortilla wrap where I’d drown it in hot sauce and salsa!!! This time around? It was meat and Chinese food early on. Now I’m just craving boring old chocolate….cake, cookies, ice cream.
With #1 it was Nallys chili and hot dogs. With #2 it was chips and salsa. The craving squasher with this pregnancy is the fact that I have gestational diabetes. I have been of course craving anything with carbs which is the main thing I have to limit. I am hoping that this keeps me good so that I don’t gain a ton of weight, but it still sucks out the little fun that is there in being pregnant.
With my son it was BBQ sandwiches from Johnny Rays. I could not get enough. During my third trimester, we ate BBQ three nights a week. I remember one night, I asked for the Jumbo sandwich, and my husband just watched me in amazement. He could not believe that I was able to eat the whole thing, along with some fries. I also craved brownies, but I always crave brownies, even now, not pregnant. Ha! It is my weakness.

For some reason I had to have a combo burrito from Taco Bell, once I had it the craving went away.
All through my pregnancy though, my cravings were for as much fresh fruit and salt & vinegar chips I could get in my mouth.
Still like the fruit but cannot stand the chips anymore!

Hostess cupcakes! Don’t much care for them (I’ve probably a dozen in the 17 years since my last pregnancy). And salted ice, I would get a cup of ice from the coney island and then pour salt on it and suck on it all night. I know it’s disgusting, but that’s how I knew I was pregnant the third time. Why else would anyone want salted ice.
With my first, it was fried chicken and mayo. I can’t stand either one. I would just close my eyes and eat enough to make the craving go away.
