Reading Together

Last week Dearest came home with a box of books for Evan. He had stopped at a music/book shop after work and found the Reading Together: Green Box Level 4 on sale, so he thought he would bring it home and see what Evan thought.

There are six books in the box: 1 funny rhyming book, 2 traditional tales, 2 new stories, and 1 “information” book as they call it. It’s a bit like the Charlotte Mason idea of living books instead of stuffy, dry text books. In Evan’s set it’s a story about dinosaurs trying to drive to their friend and in the process it teaches about reading maps. There’s also a parent booklet with ideas for helping kids learn to read, and each book has more tips at the beginning and end.

Evan loves these books, especially the silly rhyme book. What is it about books in a box that makes him so happy? I like that they’re just right, easy in some places to keep him encouraged but still challenging in other places to push him farther. And there’s a bit of a multicultural focus. One story is a traditional tale from India and another is a funny story that takes place in Africa. Which of course leads to questions, pulling out the map, and learning new things about other cultures.

This set is for kids 5 and up, but there are also sets for 2 year-olds, 3 year-olds, and 4 year-olds. These are great sets for kids starting reading or about to start. If my little book lover approves then they must be good.

Thanks for this great tip. My girls love reading, and I’m always looking for more good books for them.

By the way, the link from the WFMW Linky didn’t work for me…I had to just go to your homepage and find your post. Not sure what the problem was…
