Sally Kern Says No Divorce For You

There’s a common argument among those who are against same-sex marriage, that it somehow going to hurt marriage to let everyone do it. And the rest of us usually roll our eyes, because the “pro-traditional marriage” people never seem to be anti-divorce. Which, you know, divorce is the leading cause of the failure of marriage.

Leave it to good ol’ Sally Kern to take up that message and make it her own.

An Oklahoma state legislator plans to introduce an act that would make some divorces illegal.

Scheduled for introduction in the 2010 legislative session by state Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, House Bill 2279 would restrict the “use of incompatibility as a ground for divorce” in Oklahoma.

OK, so points for being consistent. She gets that to be pro-marriage in her world view you not only need to stop people you do not like from marrying, but also stop people you do not like from divorcing. Next she plans to reintroduce young girls being married off by their fathers and virginity tests for the brides. I really hope she gets some praise for this bill from Rush Limbaugh. Or someone remembers Kern’s “gays are the biggest threat” speech and links it to Karl Rove’s push to ban gay marriage. Conservative hypocrisy tastes like homemade cookies fresh from the oven.

The bill would not allow for divorce on the basis of incompatibility if:

* There are living minor children of the marriage
* The parties have been married 10 years or longer
* Either party files a written objection to the granting of a divorce

Sally, Sally, Sally. You’re like a gift that keeps on giving. Now if only I could find the damn receipt and exchange you for a nice atheist, gay, divorced, abortion providing, porn star.

Aren’t you proud to have her in our state?! I can’t stand that woman.

Oh and FYI a few weeks ago I went to KOCO.com and got a worm on my computer from a popup ad on their site so you may want to not go to it or be careful if you do. I even have a popup blocker and anti-virus but it still got through and was a pain to get off.

Why the 10 years rule? That seems kind of arbitrary. But maybe I would have to have more experience with Sally Kern to truly understand.

One set of my grandparents stayed married for almost 50 years (when my grandfather died) but they didn’t like each other much. I’ve heard they were always that way, staying married out of spite and because they were supposed to. I don’t see how that really strengthens marriage, any more than preventing same sex marriage does. But again, I clearly live in a whole different reality than Sally Kern.

Because it’s sooo good for children to have their parents role model marriage as mutual hatred, disdain or apathy. And incidentally, doesn’t this also allow for perpetrators of domestic violence to stay married to their partners, no matter what?! Awesome!

Silly Zoey! Marriage isn’t about love, it’s about making as many God-fearing, gay hating, conservative babies as possible. ;)

Summer – just love your posts. It’s just as stupid down here in TX – and exactly as you said ‘God-fearing, gay hating, conservative babies.’ I never could understand why you should be afraid of your God? Isn’t that the most ridiculous thing? Just thankful that there’s a Unitarian Universalist church nearby for some sanity in this ridiculously right wing area.
