The 4 year Old Is Reading
A terrible thing happened yesterday. It was tragic, I nearly cried, and I spent most of the night staring at baby pictures of Evan grieving.
He read a book. *sobs*
A couple months ago I had won set 1 of the Bob Books for beginner readers. I decided to hang onto them and let him have them for Christmas, though they were a less thrilling gift than the new bike was. Last night his interest was finally on the books so I pulled out the first one in the set. We went over the letter sounds a couple times, talked about sounding out words by their letters, then suggested “why don’t you try to read this page.”
And he did. Well. Like a freaking pro. (I recorded it on my phone, but the damn thing is still giving me error messages instead of sending images/video). So then we hopped online and went to Starfall.com where he tore through the “at” words like they were nothing. Seriously, chewed them up and spit them out.
Who said my baby boy was allowed to grow up? Come on, who was it? He’s supposed to be tiny and sweet and still curling up in my arms. Not this big, bad, book reading, bike riding, wiping mama’s kisses off his cheeks boy.
Today we’re going to try the next book, though I’m suspecting he’ll have no trouble with it either. I may need to find the second and third sets for him quicker than I thought so he can keep up on the roll he’s on. I may also need to buy some fancy Rackmount lcd to protect the laptop when he gets over excited about reading the words and grabs the monitor wildly. He’s definitely excited about reading now, and has declared that soon he will read me a bedtime story instead of me reading to him.
See? He’s growing up too fast! I did not authorize this at all. I demand a recount, a revote, something to stop this “growing up” business. It’s just not right! Where did my baby go?!

And see, this is just what I was needing. I have been fluctuating back and forth with Bob books as BigBrother has shown an interest in reading. “What’s THAT word? And that word? AND THAT WORD?!”
BB also loves Starfall. LOVES!
I’m going to order these soon. Thank you!

Congratulations! And thanks for the Starfall site mention… I had never heard of it before and so far it looks like something my 6 year olds’ could enjoy!
