The Grim Reaper Carries Insulin

Diabetes runs in my family. Not just hanging out, it kills us. My mom is in a wheelchair, flushing her body because her kidneys quit working. Thanks to diabetes. I’ve know of 3 aunts that died from diabetes. One cousin who probably would have ended up the same way if other things hadn’t gotten to her first. I’ve spent a lot of years being aware of what this disease can do to me.

So when my blood sugar popped high a couple weeks ago I fluctuated between denial and terror. On one side, I’m genetically predetermined to have diabetes. Like having curly hair and green eyes, there’s not a whole hell of a lot that I can do about it. On the other end, I eat a ton of fruits and vegetables and have breastfed enough years to drop my risks significantly. Right now it feels like my future is on the flip of a coin.

After the first high test I’ve tested normal since then. Both in a fasting and a two hour test at the doctor, and doing random tests with my mom’s glucometer. Maybe it was a fluke. Maybe stress or something I ate elevated it temporarily. Or maybe that was just the first of many flashing red lights. Either way, I don’t like it.

I’m sorry you had that scare and am glad your blood-sugars are more normal. I applaud you for being proactive about your health. So many people put their head in the sand and don’t want to deal with the possibility. Will be thinking about you!

I hope it was a one-off thing. I learned during my first pregnancy not to eat cookies before doing the pee test at the midwives. Cookies = spilling glucose, no cookies = in the clear. I think that something as small as that can make the difference, which is why they do the fasting control thing to really check.

I have diabetes in my family, too, and so does my husband. Doesn’t make me happy to think about it too much. :(

I’m hoping it’s a one-off too! But it pays to be careful. I have diabetes in my family as well, so I’ve had a couple of instances where they were concerned about my blood sugar but it turned out to be nothing (thankfully). The worst thing about these sorts of things is that you never really feel like you’re in the clear and it’s always hanging over you. And not worrying about things I can’t control is definitely not something I’m good at.

IF you’re overweight (not saying you are)–losing 10% of your bodyweight will significantly reduce your risk of diabetes. Cutting out refined carbs (white sugar, white flour, white rice, etc) will drastically reduce those risks, as well.

    Good luck!

I know that you are totally not into the Christian thing…but have you ever heard of the Daniel fast? I am more trying to get at the dietary part of it. You should totally check it out. We did it, and Joe and I both lost ten pounds in three weeks with no exercise. All whole foods, no preservatives, no sweeteners, no meat, no animal products for 21 days. Once you do it, you won’t want to change it….at least we didn’t. We do some sugar now, but have totally changed to vegetarians now….I smelled meat tonight and about barfed!
