The Halloween Nestle Talk
Today Evan and I had the talk.
No, not that talk. The one where we talk about Halloween and candy and a certain company that I hate. In years before we just naturally did trick-or-treating and I went through the candy myself, sorting out undesirables. This year though, Evan is old enough to understand a few things.
We talked about using this time for charity rather than candy, groups such as Unicef and local charities. He liked the idea, but he’s still got candy on his mind. So we sat down and had the conversation, the one where mom explains why she doesn’t buy some of the goodies he gets at his cousins’ or grandparents.
You know, they say the sex talk is hard. But frankly I think explaining to a 5 year old that the people who make Wonka bars also beat and torture children, kill babies, and hurts women. How much detail is too much? I don’t want to give the poor boy nightmares, but I want him to understand that these are bad people. Especially with the candy-loving holiday coming up. So we had the talk. I answered his questions, explained what they did, and tried not to go into into much detail (or start curing).
Then we came to a compromise. He would do charity collections from family, but still get candy from the neighbors. He doesn’t want Nestle candy (and we talked about all the candy they make). He wants a stick to wear on his costume requesting no Nestle candy, but if he gets any he wants to give it away. And he came up with this plan all on his own. He knows it will be hard, and he knows not everyone will do it, but he says
If I eat the candy they will think I like them. I don’t want to be friends with mean people, not even if they make chocolate.
Yes, I did well up a little.
If you’re interested in skipping Nestle for Halloween too, check out the #boonestle Halloween boycott of Nestle’s products organized by @that_danielle and @blacktating.
p.s. If you want to donate, I did set up a personal page for Evan that you can donate on. Click here to donate to UNICEF for Halloween.

Weskip the Nestle candy too. And yes, all associated brands.
Pretty easy when you’re anti-consumerist and don’t buy a lot of packaged food.

You’re doing a wonderful job with them (both raising your kids & dealing with nestle). Well done.
