I was talking with some other moms over the weekend about our least favorite parts of our houses. I think there was a tie between the kitchen and the bathrooms. I know that’s a tie for me, at least in terms of cleaning. Both get dirty quicker than any other room in the house. And I never can seem to keep up with either no matter how hard I try. I’m almost ready to hire a maid to just come clean those two rooms once a week for me. Almost ready, the frugal part of me is still winning that war.
Both rooms are small, so there isn’t a lot of space to put things. That results in both getting cluttered easily. In the kitchen there is limited counter and cabinet space, as well as the washer and dryer and the cat area in there as well. All it takes is one day for the place to become overwhelmed.
The bathroom is just as bad. There is one small sink/cabinet combo, and that’s it for the bathroom vanities. With tooth brushes on one side, a storage box on the other, and the big sink in the middle the space is gone. We are lucky to have a long set of shelving against one wall, unfortunately it was built behind the shower so a lot of space is taken up with pipes and plumbing. That’s why the back of the toilet is covered in stuff that likes to fall off and hit me while I’m trying to pee.
I tried using the little storage containers that stick to the shower wall to put soaps and shampoos in hoping to help, but they just kept falling down. There isn’t really any free wall space to add shelves to, but I’m thinking I might be able to add something to the back of the door. Maybe something slim and simple like this shelf.
Of course that still leaves the kitchen, but no amount of shelving there will help. I need to just get off my butt keep it clean. Blah, June Cleaver I’m not.

Huh. Just pausing for lunch before I launch in to a giant cleaning of the kitchen and bathroom in anticipation of my mom’s visit. You know, the kind of cleaning where you realize that you need to wash the walls and the miniblinds too. So, thanks for the comraderie.

I hate those rooms too, but they’re the ones that make me feel the most accomplished for having cleaned them. If I get the bathroom done early, I feel like I can take the whole rest of the day off. Especially if I do that area behind the toilet. I hate that place the most in the whole house. Aren’t you glad you know that now?

I am so happy to read your blog entry today *smile* We bought a house about 8 years ago with a very plain (but big ) kitchen and 2 plain bathrooms… All of my presale prep has been to those rooms… I wanted to make the “wet” rooms the best! My plan was/is to make those rooms the simpliest to clean and organize =-) What would be more important, Easier to clean, or storage?
Thanks

I *hate* my kitchen and bathroom. We have small spaces, too, so everything is overflowing everywhere. I’ve taken to cleaning the bathroom each day, and it makes it much easier to keep on top of the grime. I just wish I could do that with the kitchen, too. It is the main connective room in my house, the one in which everyone walks through to get where they’re going. Needless to say, the floor is always a disaster.
