Wool Diaper Cover From a Sweater

I got a large 100% Merino wool sweater for $0.40 at the thrift shop and was thrilled to death. I think I ran around the house squealing as soon as I got home with it. It had to be fate that I got it. I had taken the boys to drop off recycling and stop at the library for a bit. We were on our way home and had no plans to stop at the thrift shop as I was broke. but somethign made me turn around and go back. Good thing I did, this sweater was beautiful.

I love wool diaper soakers, but buying a new one can be costly. And I’m still a beginner knitter so I knew I couldn’t try to knit one. But I can cut and I can sew and I can follow directions pretty well. I used the pattern at Frugal Baby Tips. It’s a pretty simple pattern: just cut a triangle, fold it up, and sew. I used the sleeves for legs to make long pants. I’ve got a second triangle to sew up soon that I am going to cuff off to make just a cover that he can wear under other pants. But here are the pants that I have made so far.

The legs/sleeves were a bit long so I had to put them on him and fold and measure. They are still a bit long, but I am hoping that by this winter they will be the perfect length. A is already so tall for his age. And should the need arise they could also work as warm pants for E .

Very cute!!! I have been looking for some sweaters to try that with but I have not found any that I like. I guess that not a lot of people wear wool sweaters in my climate and I can hardly blame them.
