World AIDS Day 2008

Today is the 20th aniversary of World AIDS Day. 20 years and we are still battling an uphill war. Though treatment has improved and awareness has spread there are still too many people sick from this disease.
We need to spend moe time teaching people the facts about AIDS. There are still some people who view it as a “gay disease” or a “punishment from god”. As long as these stories are still being spread then people who are at risk are not being helped.
We need to hold our government more accountable. Bush did a lot of damage, his Global Gag Rule kept much needed funds from groups that actively helped people in poorer countries practise safe sex. Thanksfully it is something that Obama is supposed to sign away, but we need to stand up and make sure the government knows we want to see end. Visit AIDS Acountability to see how our’s and other countries rank in the fight against AIDS.
We need to provide education and prevention. Tell kids why they should use a condom, then make sure they can get their hands on as many as they need evey time they need one. Stop the spread of disease through dirty needles by providing a safe place for junkies to drop off old needles in exchange for clean ones.
And we need to stop treating sex like it’s some dirty, shameful secret. The more we feel ashamed of sex and our sexuality the more we will try to hide it, putting ourselves into risky situations. Not buying condoms, not getting tested, not talking openly and honestly with our partners about our history. These things increase the risk of infection for us, and ofr our kids when we pass on the “sex is wrong” fear to them.
So what are you doing today to spread the message and fight the battle?
