You Know What’s Pro-Life? Protecting Life.

Unless you live under a rock you’ve probably already heard about the Tim Tebow Super Bowl commercial controversy. Tim Tebow’s mom along with Focus on the Family spend a couple million for a 30 second ad spot to tell women how she choose not to have an abortion, and look at her son now.

Awwww.

Puke.

You know what would have been “pro-life”? Spending that 2 million on starving babies already born and in need of aid. Spending that 2 million on health care for mothers too poor to afford it. Sending that 2 million to Haiti where there are children dying right fucking now. Those things, I would be willing to call “pro-life”.

You see, there’s nothing pro or life about these groups. Hold up a living, breathing, dying baby in front of them and they couldn’t give a shit less. Stand a “pro-family” asshole in front of a mother who can’t afford to see the doctor and he’d just insult her for being a “welfare queen”. No these people, they don’t one shit about life or supporting it. Their only goal is hurting women. Whether by political bullying, or spiritual shaming like this commercial, making sure women stay at the bottom of the pile is their only concern.

There’s nothing “pro-life” about these people, and there never will be.

Good point of view piece! I totally agree with how pushing this or that position is often a waste of resources.

If we want to save every life shouldn’t we ensure the lives we’ve saved are going to be good? Growing up poor or going without sucks. How are we going to take care of all the unwanted children? We can’t even handle the impoverished and abandoned ones now.

All I can say is EXACTLY. (I think I found your blog through Christine @ “Welcome to my Brain”.)

YES. Pro-life in the US seems to be code for anti-choice. I don’t understand how anyone can claim to care about a fetus and the mother who chooses to carry to term (though, we won’t get into how/where she chooses to birth… there are “rules” for that sort of thing too!) and so “I wash my hands of you” against that same child and mother after the birth. Don’t get it.

Not only that, but these assholes would also say such enlightened things as, “They’re like stray animals. You feed them and they breed.”

You know what we should do? Sterilize poor women. Oh, wait, when I was on Medicare for my 2nd pregnancy (before insurance at a new job kicked in), I WAS offered to get “fixed” right after i gave birth! Gee, thanks! I’m poor, so I probably should be done having children. (BTW: Does the Division of Child Support Enforcement offer free snips to repeat offenders? No. Hm. I wonder why that is….misogyny, perhaps? *eyeroll*)

Nice post. If some pro-lifers would believe in supporting women and children (WWJD?), then I’d have a lot more respect for them.

You make an excellent point when you say that there are kids in Haiti that need help right now. Yet, they aren’t receiving the help they need. That would be PRO=LIFE!

I know they are going to air this commercial, and i’ll undoubtedly strike up a conversation about the ethics of aborition, yadda yadda. I heard yesterday that a gay dating site, is trying to get an ad for their site to run directly after this anti-abortion commercial. I really hope they are successful at doing it. Could you imagine the looks on all the pro-lifer’s faces when they’re ad is followed up with that! I’d be classic!
